New Year, Old Resolutions

Posted on January 3, 2010 with 5 comments
I guess it's only natural that the custom of New Year's resolutions has earned iconic stature in our culture. 'In with the new out with the old', as they say. And what better time than the start of a new year (and decade). But wait! Some of the old might be worth keeping.

About 10 years ago I was finally able to distill the priorities in my life into 3 categories: Health, Family and Music. What a relief! Now the resolutions are simple.

1. Take good care of myself (physically and spiritually)

2. Treat every moment with my loved ones as though it might be the last time I get to be with them (it might).

3. Respect the gift of music that I have been given and share it with as many folks as possible.

And so it has been for a few New Years now. The details change but the general spirit of my resolutions are the same.

I am now adding one more to the list: SIMPLIFY. Time to start getting rid of some STUFF. This is the year I take a hard look at the excesss and waste in my life. Not just for my spirit (you never see a U Haul behind a hearse) but also for the planet (see http://storyofstuff.com/ ).

I would love to hear what your New Year's resolutions are. Leave your comments here. Happy New Year!!!!

Great resolutions. They should help you have fullfilld year. I'm glad that I'm a part of them.

My New Years resolutions:

1) I will not get caught up in gossip on the "failings" or challenges that others face but instead wish them well in their endeavors (i.e. Tiger Woods, Michael Jackson)

2) I will continue to speak out against 21st century sexual slavery and inform people of the main organization I support, Women for Women, Int.

3) I will honor our mother earth and pray that other humans do so too

4) I will remember those who languish away unjustly in our prison system

5) I hope for substantial and sufficient health care for all Americans

6) I pray for an end to the wars that Americans foster everywhere they exist

Blessings to you in the New Year!

This year it is "be true to myself", other years it included loved ones, like yours does. One year I chanted "be a better friend", and I believe I reached that goal given all the amazing, long lasting, loving, lovely friends that I have.

Love how you whittled down your priorities so they can really be guiding principles. Thanks for the good examples!
