I've been on the road promoting 'Alan's Confectionery (the musical)' for most of 2015 and it's been over a year since Alexander's Real Time Band has done a show in Portland. I'm attending the 3rd Annual Dramatists Guild National Conference this year in La Jolla, CA as part of a promotional tour for my new musical, Alan's Confectionery. While there I'll be performing music from the play with my long time friend and musical mentor David Timothy Smith at the piano. David has been thrilling locals and tourists at this legendary piano bar for over a decade, with his encyclopedic knowledge and delivery of the great American Songbook. I am honored to add these songs to that repertoire, and share them with conference attendees and the always packed audience. Should be a blast!

Alan's entrepreneurial spirit has navigated the family through the Great Depression and World War II. But at least one of his children is plagued with an unanswered question from the past, "What happened to Mama?”. The story takes place in St. Louis in the 30s and 40s. It's a story about family, a mother separated from her children by circumstance and a struggle that she shares with her oldest son to be reunited. The original score is heavily influenced by the music of that period.

I'll be sitting in with singer songwriter Angela Pope as she swings through PDX on her PNW tour. Frankie L will by joining us on percussion. Here's a tune Angela and I wrote and recorded together a few years back. Her new stuff is even better.

The crew at K Records just contacted us to ask if we would perform at the 2014 Helsing Junction Sleepover / Music Fest. Of course we said yes. This is the 10th year of this event and I have played at every one. Sadly, this may be the last... as long time producer Jade Ajani may be called to focus more on his film making career. We'll see. But the point is…. put this on your calendar now. It's a ways off, but it just might be your last chance to catch my favorite summer music festival. Here's the latest info.

We almost never get to play in Portland anymore so this will be a fun one for us to connect with our peeps in PDX. Frankie, Susan and I will be helping our friends, Monica and Jennifer (former owners of the Clinton St. landmark, Dots Cafe) show off their new restaurant, The Midpoint. It will also give us a chance to work out the new songs we are rehearsing for our summer touring season. Come on out. It may be a while before we play in Portland again. ARTB returns to Rock Creek! Sarah 'Frankie' L, Susan Peck and I are excited to be reunited for the first time since October. Frankie has just returned from back to back tours (including 6 weeks in Europe with Poeina Suddarth). That means this show will feature the sweet harmonies of the Real-ettes on your favorite ARTB songs and on some brand spankin' new ones. Be there!
This ARTB Songwriter Carousel is also the last ARTB performance of 2013. But we're going out with a bang. Susan and I will be trading and sharing songs with Leah Hinchcliff on bass and Andrew Maldarelli on guitar. Leah and Andrew perform regularly around portland as the duo (sometimes trio) known as Gravy. Both are excellent songwriters and we are excited to trade off songs with them. Rounding out the rhythm section will be the ever awesome Ward Griffiths on drums. Happy Holidays!
Our pilot for this event in September was so successful, the Alberta St. Pub has offered us a monthly slot for this songwriter series. Susan Peck and I have got some very special guest slated for November so far: Ward Griffiths on drums (from the Quadraphonnes), Hershel Yatovitz (lead guitarist for Chris Isaak) and guest songwriters Mel Kubik (sax and keyboardist from Quarterflash) and the ever soulful ZZ Rose. It's year number 9 for this annual music festival and I'm happy to say that I have performed at every single one, either as a solo artist or with ARTB. This year I'll be performing with Sarah 'Frankie' L (drums, voice), Susan Peck (keyboards, voice) and Jared Snyder (guitar, bass). As always, you get a full weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday; August 16-18) of original music from multiple bands, organic farm fresh food, swimming in the Chehalis River, films and dancing. Our own Professor Susan Peck is climbing Mt. Hood this summer to raise money for the American Lung Association. This is our 2nd benefit concert to help Susan reach the $3200 goal she has pledged to the ALA. ARTB returns to Orcas Island for our annual Fall concert.
Once again, it's time for swimming, camping, organic fresh farm food and great music on the Chehalis River at the Helsing Junction Sleepover and K Records Music Fest We will be sharing the bill with a couple of dozen other acts over the 3 day weekend (Aug 24-26). Some of our favorites include: LAKE, Kendl Winter, Curious Mystery, Tender Forever, Gary May and Danny Kelly. Always a highlight of the summer music festival season. Don't miss it.

On May 12th, 29 year old Ari Alexander suffered a major brain hemorrhage and stroke. He was in ICU at Providence hospital for the next 3 weeks and is currently undergoing physical therapy and awaiting a second surgery to replace the section of skull that was removed to save his life. Although a full recovery is expected, it will mean months of medical and living expenses for Ari and his wife Katie. McMenamins and members the PDX music community have joined together, donating their time, talent and resources to produce this Benefit concert for Ari and Katie at the Mission Theater on August 5th from 4 to 10pm. The line up includes: Melao de Cuba, Quadraphonnes, Newel Briggs, Poeina Suddarth, Alexander's Real Time Band, Sportin' Lifers, Gravy, Half-wit Ad-lib, and more (to be announced). This will be great afternoon and evening of music and a silent auction to benefit a young couple in crisis. Please come out to show your support and have a good time in the process! All ages. Sliding scale admission. $20-30 suggested donation (or just give what you can).

For those of you who don't know, Newel and I were the co founders of the regional favorite World Beat band, Dub Squad, and performed and toured (US and Japan) with that band from 1988-1996. We haven't performed together in almost a decade, so I'm very excited that we get to do this show with him. If you haven't heard Newel play, you are in for a treat. This will be our debut at this venue. There is a baby grand piano there so expect a few songs you don't normally hear from me (since I don't carry a piano to gigs most of the time). See you there!

This will be our debut on the west side of the river. This place is owned and operated by a musician. Nice stage and sound system. Great food.

It's April Fools Day and I will be the featured songwriter for this songwriters showcase. Guest songwriters will perform one song apiece for the first half hour of the show followed by a full set of original songs from yours truly. Mr T says 'I pity the fool that doesn't make it to this show!'.
Our first Saturdays at the Flying Cat this month will be a benefit for KZME radio! www.kzme.fm . KZME is scheduled to begin broadcasting this year. The station will be dedicated to broadcasting local music (mixed genres)…supporting local arts and culture…and sharing information about east side public affairs.
The Cat is always a good time and you never know who may sit in with us. So come on out and support local music! All ages.
